quarterback colin kaepernick, fresh off yesterday's big win. . good evening. i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm heather holmes. we are just a few days away from a major announcement from the white house on the obama administration's plans to address gun violence following the tragedy in newtown, connecticut. in the debate over gun control and fears of possible new regulations led to a big boost in attendance at a gun show this weekend right here in the bay area. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us with how many people showed up at the cow palace. >> reporter: about 10,000 people a day came to the cross roads of the west gun show at the cow palace this weekend. many of the people attending say the talk about gun control was top of mind. it's not every day you see someone walking outside with an ar 15 in hand, but jeremiah stephens brought it to the gun show this morning to shop for

supplies. >> 5567, 22556. >> is am hoe hard to come by? >> oh, yeah. >> why do you think that is? >> everybody's afraid they will ban it. >> reporter: ammunition was a popular item, but some patrons using carts to carry boxes of it away. earlier this week, california assembly member proposed a so- called bullet control bill that would introduce new rules to the sale of ammunition. people at the gun show say the threat of state and federal regulations made this event more popular. >> i think that people are worried their rights will be taken away and that the only people that are going to have guns are the ones getting them illegally. >> reporter: at 7:00 this morning, hundreds had already lined up to get into the event's second day. >> this is why the gun show is so big. it's because of more loss and more loss. >> reporter: the president's task force on gun violence is supposed to offer its recommendations on tuesday. one of the ideas discussed, requiring universal background checks, even on private gun sales.

>> do you think it's okay to add more -- to include more people? >> i do think it's okay, yes. absolutely. >> reporter: others were uncomfortable with any gun regulations. >> i think they should focus more on trying to get ill lowell guns off the street. >> reporter: nra did recruiting at this gun show, offering a free ticket for anyone who signed up for their $35 a year membership. as one member said, quote, the more members we have, the more the politicians will have to listen to us. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. >> i have two small children. i sympathize with what happened there. lot of times when you have a tragedy like that, unfortunately, you have an emotional reactionary response. a father against gun control spoke out at a protest in upstate new york this weekend. some residents in saratoga asked for the show to be shut down. the demonstrations stayed

peaceful. several thousand people turned out for that gun show. coming up later at 5:30, we'll continue our coverage with a look at the divide over how to prevent gun violence. two people are recovering tonight, including an elderly woman after a gunman opened fire in san francisco's glenn park neighborhood. police were called to a home on alameda boulevard near silver avenue around 10:00 last night. when they arrived, they found an 80-year-old woman and 50- year-old man with gunshot wounds. both victims were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening wounds. anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call san francisco police. a hayward police dog is being praised tonight for sniffing out a key piece of evidence in a suspected gang shooting. the hayward police department tweeted this picture last night of canine officer nikki finding a handgun near some bushes. police say the gun was found a few hours after a gang shooting nearby. the tweet included a line reading, quote, you can't hide

from the nose. in san jose, fire crews are on the scene right now of a two- alarm house fire. the fire at a home on gara road near mount pleasant road started about two hours ago, producing a plume of thick, black smoke you can see in the picture could be seen for miles. a viewer posted this photo on our facebook page. six people managed to escape unhurt. fire officials say the blaze likely started on the roof and did major damage to the roof, as well as to the second floor of this home. a marin county man is under arrest tonight after police say he sexually assaulted and robbed a woman as she entered her san francisco home. 25-year-old jovan jones of marin city is accused of forcing his way into the victim's apartment at about 8:00 last night. authorities say jones demanded money and belongings from the victim before assaulting her. he was booked into san francisco jail on 13 felony charges, including rape, burglary, robbery threats, aggravated assault, and false

imprisonment. an american canyon teenager was killed this morning and three other teens were seriously injured in a solo car crash in napa county. the car rolled over about 1:40 in the morning on wild horse valley road near napa. the force of the crash tore the vehicle in two. the highway patrol identified the teenager who died as 18- year-old tucker welling. authorities say a juvenile was flown to uc davis with critical injuries. and two 19-year-olds were taken to queen of the valley hospital with serious injuries. investigators believe speed may have been a factor in the crash. in the south bay, the medical examiner has identified two 19-year-olds killed in a car accident yesterday morning on northbound 880 in san jose. the coroner says louis carlos flores and joseph robert silon died when their car hit a dirt embankment near the old bayshore off ramp. initial investigation suggests alcohol may have played a role in the crash. about a dozen people were sickened this morning at a san jose hotel, after guests started smelling a chemical

odor. fire officials say in all, 13 guests on the 18th floor, the san jose hilton complained of throat and eye irritation. no one was hospitalized. everyone, though, was told to stay in their rooms while hazmat crews investigated. tonight, there is still no word on just what that chemical was. fire crews in mountain view rushed to a two-alarm fire at a mobile home early this morning. the fire department sent us this photo of crews putting out that blaze. the flames broke out just before 5:00 this morning at a home at the sahara mobile village on east real. no one was injured. crews managed to extinguish the fire quickly, but the mobile home, we're told, was a total loss. john mcafee has a new home. according to the oregonian newspaper, the silicon valley software, who was embroiled in an international police investigation, has moved to portland. the newspaper says he plans to work on a graphic novel about his experiences in belize. authorities in belize still want to question mcafee about the november killing of

mcafee's neighbor. mcafee fled police from guatemala last month, then was deported to miami. he has denied any involvement in the killing. continuing coverage now on the 49ers' journey toward the super bowl. we now know who the 49ers will play for the nfc championship. the atlanta falcons today beat the seattle seahawks, so that means the 49ers will face-off against the falcons next sunday in atlanta. the winner of that game goes to the super bowl in new orleans on february 3rd. we will have all of the highlights of that atlanta- seahawks game coming up later in sports wra. meantime, police at candlestick had their hands full last night at candlestick with dozens of ejections. 92 ejections. 62 were taken to the medical clinic. 25 people, we're told, were arrested for public intoxication. two were arrested on suspicion

age 14. the 26-year-old was set to go on trial next month on charges of illegally downloading technology information. the u.s. attorney in massachusetts and mit pursued exceptionally harsh charges that could have sent him to prison for 30 years, which the family claims contributed to his death. his death has prompted a twitter response. thousands of his supporters in research have taken to the social networking site to provide links to academic papers regardless of whether they have permission. the protest, running under the hashtag pdf tribute is meant to be a virtual representation of aaron swartz' believes in the availability and access of all information. an inspection of a boeing 787 dreamliner confirmed today that the aircraft had a fuel leak. the japan airlines plane was on the tarmac at boston's logan airport last tuesday when the pilot of another plane noticed

the leaking fuel just before that plane was to take off for tokyo. an airline spokesman says an inspection found the liquid was leaking from a nozzle on the plane's leftwing. the incident was one of several mechanical problems for the dreamliner in recent months, prompting the faa to launch a safety review of the aircraft, just last week. survivors mark one year since the deadly ship wreck of the costa concordia. the events held to commemorate the victims today. >> i don't know of any reason why we would make that decision today. >> also, lawmakers weigh in the president's plan to pull troops out of afghanistan. why some say it's worth it to wait. >> plus, protesters here in the bay area mark the anniversary of the opening of guantanamo prison. ñsxóxgñ

. this plaque was unveiled today in italy, on this the first anniversary of the costa concordia ship wreck that killed 32 people. survivors and victims' relatives marked the day with numerous commemorations, including a moment of silence at the exact time that the ship struck the reef. >> it's going to be exactly that moment this happened. heart is beating even faster. >> the concordia slammed into the reef after the ship's captain took it off course to bring the ship a little closer to giglio island.

the ship then took on water through a 230-foot gash in the hull and rolled onto its side. the ship's captain remains under house arrest, accused of multiple manslaughter and leaving the ship before all passengers were evacuated. he has not yet been charged, but an indictment is expected by the end of this month. a major development to tell you about today in egypt. a court granted former president hosni mubarak a new trial in connection with charges stemming from the killings of hundreds of protesters during the 2011 uprising. there was loud applause in the courtroom today, as the judge read the ruling. it is a victory for the ailing mubarak and his interior minister, who also won an appeal. both men were convicted of not preventing the deaths of hundreds of protesters, attacked by police and snipers during the uprising. the two were sentenced to life in prison. in other news of the world tonight, from india comes word of another alleged gang rape on a bus. police say six men are under arrest for the attack in the northern state of punjab.

they say the bus driver did not stop at the woman's village, despite her repeated pleas. instead, they say he took her to a building where he, the conductor, and five others took turns raping her. a seventh suspect remains on the loose. the incident comes a month after the deadly rape of a student on a bus in new delhi that sparked international outrage. in moscow, thousands of people took to the streets to protest a new law banning the adoption of russian children by u.s. families. russia's adoption ban was in retaliation for a new u.s. law, targeting russians accused of human rights abuses. unicef estimates there are about 740,000 children not in parental custody in russia, while about 18,000 russians are on the waiting list to adopt a child. over the past two decades, about 60,000 russian children were adopted by americans. [ screaming ] at the vatican, four women

affiliated with a ukrainian feminist organization held a topless protest in st. peter's square to protest the catholic church's stand on same-sex marriage. the women were whisked away by police. the protest occurred as the pope was delivering a prayer. the prayer was not interrupted. lawmakers weighed in today on president obama's plan to withdraw troops from afghanistan ahead of school. bob corker urged caution. >> i would wait and i don't know of any reason why we would make that decision today. it seems that we would want to see what the state of afghanistan is. we would wand to see what's happening in the electoral process, all of those things obviously big factors. >> ultimately, this has to be an afghan-led effort. president karzai recognized that. i think the military leaders i met, both american and afghan commanders recognize it also. democratic senator jack reed says afghanistan is ready for u.s. troops to leave. afghan forces will take over

. a domestic violence suspect shot by police yesterday in a movie theater is expected to survive. movie goers at the theater ducked for cover, as officers stormed in during a matinee of les miserables. investigators say the suspect, 20-year-old tom biado had gone into the dark theater, pretending to be a patron to evade police. the suspect first obeyed the officer, put up his hands. then police say he lowered them into his lap, raised a handgun and turned that gun toward the officer. the community of newtown, connecticut is trying to decide what to do with the scene of that devastating masacre. for now, students from sandy hook elementary are going to a different school. some residents want sandy hook demolished and a memorial built on the property to honor the teachers and children killed

back on december 14th. others, though, in the area want it renovated and the crime seen removed, but kept open as a school. >> i think children in the future deserve to experience the same beautiful memories that i did. >> i don't want to see the land and the building stay empty and broken. i want to do something with it. >> tomorrow, newtown will hold a town meeting about how to prevent more tragedies, formally joining the national debate on gun control. this week, vice president biden is expected to present a package of reforms that could include a national ban on assault rifles and universal background checks. april williams continues our coverage on this issue. >> reporter: it's been nearly a month since the devastating masacre at sandy hook elementary shocked the nation and stirred up a passionate debate about gun violence. senator joe manchin, west virginia democrat, and a-rated member of the national rifle

$50. residents from marin, sonoma, san francisco and contra costa coutts. the buybacks are scheduled january 15th and january 21st. a man from east palo alto is in jail tonight, after police say he stabbed his partner during a fight. officers arrested 30-year-old david young, after witnesses say they saw him attack the 34- year-old victim with a knife outside in a carport. the victim's name has not been released. police say he's at stanford hospital in stable condition. young was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence. president obama says he is committed to overhauling immigration this year and that includes finding a path to citizenship for most of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country. currently, a bipartisan group of senators is working on a proposed bill with the goal of introducing immigration legislation by this march. today, the mayor of los angeles spoke about the need for immigration reform. >> if we bring these people, 11 million people from out of the dark, into the light, it's

about a $1.5 trillion impact to the u.s. economy. >> for his part, president obama is expected to lay out a white house plan for immigration in the coming weeks, perhaps during next month's state of the union address. former utah governor jon huntsman is promoting a problem- solving approach in congress, with his bipartisan movement that he calls no labels. >> it's a dysfunction of congress that's now becoming our nation's dysfunction. we're becoming disfigured in a sense, our economy is, because congress is so far behind in the game. >> we don't even know our colleagues in congress out of 435. so this gives us a chance. no labels gives us that venue to sit down and have meaningful conversation. >> so far, 25 members of congress have signed on to quit the finger-pointing and focus on solutions. former governor huntsman says he hopes to get at least 50 more. there were protests all across the u.s. this weekend to mark the 11th anniversary of a

prison. human rights groups are demanding be shut down. ktvu's christien kafton talked with those opposed to the camp at guantanamo bay, who say they are disappointed with the president. >> reporter: protesters say their aim today here in san francisco was to raise awareness about the prisoners still left at guantanamo bay detention camp. so they walked back and forth across the golden gate bridge, then read the names of the detainees, one by one. >> reporter: code pink demonstrators, some in orange jump suits and black hoods, marched from both ends of the golden gate bridge, meeting in the middle, then walking to the san francisco side. organizers say they marched to remind people about the detainees incarcerated at guantanamo bay. >> today, we are aware of there are still 166 prisoners in that prison, four years after obama got elected, when he promised to close guantanamo within a

year. >> reporter: one by one, organizers read the names of detainees and demanded an end to the camp, the use of drones, and war. >> where is the justice? why don't we have justice in this country? it's hard for me to be a citizen in this country, more and more as the years go by. >> reporter: the protest drew the attention of passers-by. >> i'm not really surprised. personally, i agree with the message. >> reporter: today's protest is part of an ongoing protest against guantanamo bay. code pink says they will continue to hold similar protests every month until the camp is closed. we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2news. there are some surprising convicted killers serving time on san quinton's death row, who are considered low risk. the most notable, perhaps, is 78-year-old charles manson. the chronicle reports the prisoner's age, conduct behind bars, and the number of years since the last arrest all play

a role in whether they are considered for parole. corrections officials say it's not the only factor and only predicts the likelihood of reconviction of a felony upon release. scott peterson and sir han sir han are also considered low risk. schedule changes are taking effect today for many sam trans bus routes. the san mateo bus agency is adjusting bus schedules to improve ontime performance and efficiency. 40% of the routes have been tweaked and riders are encouraged to visit the sam tran's websites to see the changes. the changes only pertain to arrival and departure times. the routes are the same. a new survey shows gas prices inching higher again, after months of decline. the fuel price survey released today shows the national average is $3.32 a gallon. that's 7-cents higher than it was three weeks ago. the california average is about $3.59 a gallon. thousands of people bundled up to set a new record.

about 5400 snow throwers. >> mom always said you could put an eye out doing that, but that looks like fun. and it looks like we could have a snowball fight, but maybe not? >> we've got cold temperatures across the bay area, beautiful with the clear skies, pretty colors out there over san francisco. what's different tonight, though, we have a frost advisory for san francisco to reflect temperatures dropping back down into the mid-30s. but clear skies and you can see the satellite perspective right now. we can take a look at live storm tracker 2 and the bulk of the cloud cover way up to our north and also to our east. we are watching some wind out there. nothing too major. winds around 5 to 10 miles an hour, but over the higher terrain, up in the north bay, we could have stronger winds developing overnight. with that, that could help keep temperatures up a little bit, mainly up above 1500 feet, but closer to the surface, count on a very cold morning once again. temperatures will be dropping back down to the 20s and 30s. in fact, for monday, in some areas, it will be the coldest

morning of the season so far. overnight lows dropping down into the 20s, lower 20s to the 30s. then that freeze warning kicks in for most of the bay area from monday morning, from 2:00 until 9:00 tomorrow morning. here's a look at some of the current numbers. already dropping out there. you can see some lower 40s toward antioch and livermore. 42, 46, santa rosa checking in at 50. that will be changing. once again, projected numbers first thing monday morning, you will have ice on the wind shields for your monday. also, you can see the 20s for santa rosa and napa. san jose in the upper 20s. this is the fourth morning in a row where we have very cold numbers. has been a long stretch. things change a little bit over the next few days. high pressure remains anchored offshore. with that, storm track way to our north. no rain drops in our five-day forecast. notice here that morning chill. it will linger into tuesday morning, although tuesday morning will be a little bit warmer compared to tomorrow

morning. but still, we're talking about 20s and 30s, with areas of frost, as this cold pool of air moves out, beginning to gradually warm up those numbers, especially by wednesday and thursday. here's our forecast model, showing you this white contour, lots of 20s across the region, and some 30s backing out towards san francisco. into the afternoon hours, we're talking about upper 40s to lower 50s for afternoon highs. 49 to 52 degrees by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. i was talking about the dry weather, high clouds way up to our north. lots of sunshine, patchy fog by wednesday, by midweek toward the inland valleys just to start out the day. of course the big weather story -- afternoon highs mainly in the lower 50s toward san jose and los gatos. five-day forecast, with your weekend always in view, notice temperatures begin to go up a little bit. still cold tuesday morning, but there's that trend for wednesday and thursday. back up to near freezing. that will seem warm compared to

. good evening, everyone. welcome to sports wrap. when the day began, the 49ers knew they were in the nfc championship game. just didn't know if they were headed to atlanta or staying

home. they had to change thinking two times in the final 31 seconds of today's game between the falcons and seahawks. seattle's russell wilson representing the new breed of today's nfl quarterback against the more traditional matt ryan, still looking for his first playoff win. falcons got on the board with a field goal. ryan rolled out and found tony gonzalez in the back of the end zone. gonzalez doing a nice tip toe to get two feet inbounds. 10-0 falcons after the quarter. 14-0 midway through the second. then before half time, ryan threw for it all. right on the money to white, score 20-0 atlanta. after being shut out in the first half, seahawks got on the board. wilson fires to tate, who stays inbounds after the catch for 29 yards and the score. 20-7. but the falcons answered right back. 80-yard drive to snelling.

pete carroll's team down by 20, with just a little more than 2 minutes left in the quarter. then the seahawks kicked it in. wilson buys time, deciding to just run it into the end zone himself. it's 27-14 early in the fourth. ryan threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns, but it was also intercepted twice. thomas grabbed this pick. the seahawks have a chance to narrow the gap. and they did that, when wilson put a nice touch on a pass to his tight end, former raider zach miller. once down by 20, seahawks pulled within six with more than 9 minutes to play. they took the lead with just 31 seconds left. marshawn lynch coughs the ball up at the goal line. replay showed lynch had broken the plain before the ball came out. seahawks all the way back, leading 28-27 with half a minute to play. successive passes moved the ball to the seahawks' 31. matt bryant was down the middle with a 49-yard field goal. falcons back in front, 30-28, with 8 seconds left.

seattle actually had one more chance after an exceptionally short kickoff by the falcons. but wilson's desperation pass picked off in the end zone by julio jones. falcons, who have never won a super bowl getting a chance to go for just the second time in their existence. but they will have to beat the 49ers for that to happen. 30-28, the final score. the sentiment by atlanta's head coach mike smith pretty much summed it up for anyone who had a part in this game. >> wow! we talk all the time about playing a 60-minute game and finishing those games. and that's exactly what we did today. my mind goes right to we got to get ready and figure out how we're going to play better than we played in that second half of the ball game today. so that's where, that's where my mindset is. it's already flipped, already flipped the switch. the 49ers try to make it to the super bowl. nfc championship in atlanta, noon start on channel 2 and

fox. today's afc playoff game was a rematch of week 14 when the patriots routed the houston texans before a national tv audience. tom brady with a chance to be the winningest quarterback in post season history. the texans got things started with a bolt of lightning. danielle manning takes the opening kickoff and he heads up the middle of the field. one man to try and stop a touchdown. devin mccorty makes the tackle after the 94-yard return. the texans had to settle for a field goal. then came the emergence of a name not many expected to be the star of this game. cal's shane barene goes into the end zone untouched. patriots have the 7-3 lead. in the second quarter, they led 10-3. then brady found this score. texans narrowed it to 17-13 at the half, but the patriots put up 14 unanswered points in the third quarter. big hole and a draw for stephen ridley, then bradley to our old buddy brandon lloyd for 5 yards and a score.

today, thanks to the team from cal. 7th ranked bears came to face the 5th ranked cardinal. it was cal that jumped out in front, due in large part to the shooting of mckayla lyles. lyles had 14. cal led by 8 at the half. two teams had just played on tuesday in berkeley, a game won by stanford. the bears have this one under control. they run the floor after a stanford miss. boyd with a nice move to the hoop for 2 of her 19 points. cal wins 67-55. both teams have two losses overall. 3-1 in the pac-12. stanford's last conference loss was to cal in 2009. if you're an nhl fan and especially a fan of the san jose sharks, this was the day you've been waiting for for sometime. >> after the lockout that wiped out half of the season and threatened to cancel it, sharks arrived for their first workout
